Investigations into the National Identification and Registration Authority (Nira) has started.
The parliamentary committee on defence and internal affairs has started investigations into the National Identification and Registration Authority (Nira) after complaints about how the project is progressing.
Internal affairs ministry with ministry of education were constituted into a project to register all school children aged between 5- 16 years in both public and private schools and issue them with National ID cards but some irregularities have been reported.
Appearing before the committee, officials led by internal affairs minister Jeje Odong permanent secretary Dr. Benon Mutambi and Nira executive director Judy Obitre Gama said the project is going on well though with some challenges.
However, the committee was dissatisfied with the team’s explanations arguing that in their recent survey, it discovered many loopholes in the exercise and that not many Ugandans know about that registration.
